SUMMARY:Vancouver TAIWANfest Way forward: Creative Export and Exchange?
DESCRIPTION:Way forward: Creative Export and Exchange? What have we learned from the pandemic? \nWith the borders reopening\, the world will intertwine once again. These past few years have challenged many things\, including physical mobility\, how we relate to each other and the urgent call for equitable and just relations\, the ever-evolving concept of sustainability\, the introduction or resurfacing of Indigenous wisdom\, how cultures are understood or relearned\, and how borders of nations and people are being redrawn and redefined. Have we adopted a transformational framework\, or are we still in a transactional mindset? Are we truly decolonized\, or are we still living in the colonial shell when allocating resources for the creative sector? \nFor nations with diverse cultures\, these questions become much more complex. While Canada\, Taiwan\, Australia and the US perhaps share the same progressive values\, the practical realities could differ like night and day. This forum brings together four leaders in the creative sector representing different corners of the Pacific: from Taiwan\, the former Chair of the Taiwan Creative Content Agency (TAICCA) and former Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Culture in Taiwan\, Ting Hsiao-ching; from Canada\, the CEO of Creative BC\, Prem Gill; from Australia\, International Development Consultant for the Australia Arts Council\, Norman Armour; from Canada\, Chair of the Board of CAPACOA and director of Vancouver Civic Theatre\, Natalie Lue. The four will share their perspectives and experiences in non-profit arts and creative industries\, particularly on their work in the sector as it relates to lessons learned during COVID and cultivating soft power through the diversity of the countries and communities they represent. To help facilitate the discussion is Mr. Jeff Nankivell\, President and CEO of Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada. \nFor those connected to the sector—both individual creative organizations and those connected to governments with the knowledge and resources to support them—this forum aims to reveal opportunities and challenges presented in a world we increasingly share. \nRegister here \n  \n

SUMMARY:Vancouver Queer Film Festival 2022
DESCRIPTION:Since 1988\, the Vancouver Queer Film Festival has provided a platform for convening safer spaces for 2SLGBTQIA+ people and communities to be seen\, heard\, and celebrated through art\, dialogue\, and film. \n97 films from 20 countries are featured at this 34th Festival presented by RBC\, along with in-person celebrations featuring local performing artists\, post-screening Q&As with filmmakers\, and industry and community workshops. Purchase all-access Festival Passes\, online-only Digital Passes\, or individual tickets at queerfilmfestival.ca. Browse the full programme online or in the PDF of the print Festival guide. \nThe Festival’s Opening Gala screening is the local premiere of Dave Rodden-Shortt’s feature documentary The Empress of Vancouver\, an ode to local drag icon Oliv Howe\, crowned the 10th Empress of the Vancouver Dogwood Monarchist Society in 1981. In the 80s\, Oliv’s punk rock energy\, gender-bending performances and DIY glam aesthetic spoke to a political and artistic shift in Vancouver’s drag community. This proudly local documentary brings to light queer artistic legacies and histories that have previously been unseen. This film will be available exclusively in person on opening night\, with a fabulous queer royalty-themed Opening Night Party to follow the screening. \nDiscover the lineup of films and programming here!

SUMMARY:Talking Stick Festival 2022
DESCRIPTION:This year\, we gather from all 4 directions to share stories articulated through music\, dance\, theatre\, film and other forms of art presented by the Talking Stick Festival. We travel on our canoe to journey across our ancestral land bringing you\, our audience\, with us to explore our Indigenous culture through the arts. \nThe eagles circle over the travelers blessing them with courage\, wisdom\, inspiration and strength to persevere across any terrain. The ancestral silhouettes hover above the sky\, water and earth watching over them and providing guidance in their journey. While the cedar bough at the “bow” of the canoe is meant to provide protection against negative energies they may encounter during their travels. \nThe backdrop of this year’s theme is set against the majestic mountains and ocean that meet in the land of the Coast Salish People – a diverse First Nations community. We communicate our theme “Come Together” in the 3 languages spoken in this land: Squamish\, Musqueam and Tsleil-Waututh. \nThis year’s festival will be a unique experience. Our performances will be a mix of Full Circle produced events and partnerships with other notable local performing arts organizations. From June 12th to July 3rd\, we will celebrate National Indigenous History Month by showcasing our talented Indigenous performers and artists. \nWe invite you to come aboard our canoe and experience our culture and history in Vancouver.

SUMMARY:Free Creative Industries Week Screening: Portraits From a Fire
DESCRIPTION:Portraits From a Fire\nFree Screening to mark BC’s Creative Industries Week\nBC Emerging Filmmaker Award\, VIFF 2021 \nPossessing more determination than discernible talent\, teenage Tyler (William Magnus Lulua) routinely premieres his lo-fi DIY films on his reservation for a smattering of viewers who struggle to stay awake. Undaunted\, he retains his belief that he and his films are bound for bigger things. At the very least\, they can be a bigger draw than bingo. Just as his new friend Aaron (Asivak Koostachin) practically manifests from the ether to provide him with some welcome encouragement\, a DV tape resurfaces that casts new light on his family’s history and may just provide answers to questions that he’s long harboured. \nReturning to the Tl’etinqox Reserve where he grew up\, Trevor Mack has delivered an accomplished\, open-hearted first feature both made about and in collaboration with his community. Mingling authenticity and invention\, Mack employs recurring formal flourishes to illustrate the porousness of the membrane separating past and present. As Tyler abandons escapism in favour of unearthing difficult truths\, Mack testifies that where there is trauma\, there is likewise the opportunity for healing. \nLearn more and register here!  \n
