SUMMARY:CHAN CENTRE PRESENTS Oumou Sangaré
DESCRIPTION:“Sangaré’s irresistible voice enhances her music’s power to disarm critics and make defenders of outmoded traditions think twice.” -NPR\n\nHailed as “one of the great queens of Malian music” by Rolling Stone\, charismatic Grammy and UNESCO Award-winning vocalist Oumou Sangaré debuted 30 years ago with the bold\, empowering album Moussolou (“Women”). Women’s rights remain a key focus of her work\, both in song and on the ground in her native Mali\, where she campaigns fearlessly against an oppressive patriarchal system. Though often touching on difficult themes—both politically and emotionally—her music remains defiantly uplifting\, full of buoyant West African grooves\, hypnotic melodicism\, and Sangaré’s joyful\, soulful voice. \nOver her acclaimed career\, she’s worked with pioneering Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen\, sang on Herbie Hancock’s Imagine project\, released eleven solo albums\, and been cited as an inspiration by the likes of Alicia Keys\, Aya Nakamura\, and Beyoncé. \nWhen the global pandemic hit in early-2020\, Sangaré was forced to remain in the US far longer than the short trip she had originally planned. But this unexpected period of seclusion inspired Timbuktu\, the most deeply poetic and sonically ambitious statement of Sangaré’s career. “A euphoric piece of music” (New York Times)\, the album connects instruments like the kamele n’goni to its distant heirs\, the Dobro and slide guitar\, interweaving the diasporic traditions of blues and rock with the sounds of West Africa. \n\nLEARN MORE

SUMMARY:NEWWEST FILMFEST
DESCRIPTION:New West Film Society is led by a group of passionate film aficionados who want to share their love of film with the community to spark appreciation\, conversation\, and culture\, itself. Its signature event is a 3-day October festival held annually. It has steadily grown in popularity and has evolved over the years since its inception in 2011. \nThe New West Film Society was begun by a committed group of environmental and social activists who focused on relevant documentaries. In 2015\, the society re-branded itself as the New West Film Society and widened its fare to include contemporary feature films and documentaries on many subjects\, while still paying homage to its roots. More recently\, it has taken on the mantle of the “filmmakers festival”. Rather than going through curated sources of films\, such as the Toronto International Film Festival\, it now solicits filmmakers directly – locally\, nationally and internationally. This has allowed the society to create a unique festival with films of strong local relevance and also to bring to audiences to films from across Canada and around the world that aren’t seen on local screens or at other festivals. \nThe NewWest FilmFest is the mainstay of the society\, but it is also expanding its wings to create other film events throughout the year\, sometimes in partnership with others. \nOver the years\, the non-profit organization has partnered with a number of organizations and has been generously supported by local businesses\, grass-roots organizations\, the Arts Council of New Westminster\, Green Ideas Network and New Westminster Environmental Partners. \nLEARN MORE

SUMMARY:CHAN CENTRE PRESENTS Makaya McCraven: In These Times
DESCRIPTION:“McCraven has spent the past decade cementing his status as one of the most individual voices in jazz” – The Guardian\n\nMakaya McCraven has “quietly become one of the best arguments for jazz’s vitality” (The New York Times). The Paris-born\, Massachusetts-raised\, Chicago-based drummer\, composer\, producer\, and sonic collagist is a multi-talented “cultural synthesizer” whose inventive process and intuitive\, cinematic sound defies categorization. \nHis newest album\, In These Times\, is the triumphant finale of a project 7+ years in the making. It’s a preeminent addition to his already-acclaimed and extensive discography\, and it’s the album he’s been trying to make since he started making records. \nFor this very unique world debut\, McCraven has assembled a large ensemble of his close collaborators\, each an accomplished 21st century jazz musician in their own rite. In These Times releases September 23\, of this year on International Anthem\, Nonesuch & XL Recordings. \nFeaturing orchestral\, large ensemble arrangements interwoven with the signature “organic beat music” sound that’s become his signature\, the album is an evolution and a milestone for McCraven\, the producer. But moreover\, it’s the strongest and clearest statement we’ve yet to hear from McCraven\, the composer. \nLEARN MORE
