Industry Demand for Clean Energy in Victoria Following Battery Workshop

On April 15, 2025, Reel Green™ held the first regional Clean Energy Battery Workshop in Victoria, co-hosted by the Vancouver Island South and North Film Commissions.  46 attendees from Vancouver Island industry members, crew, local government, equipment vendors, and stakeholders participated in this event.

Reel Green™ Lead Justin Barnes spoke about the importance of 1) training for B.C. crews; 2) supplying tools to transition to alternatives from diesel generators; 3) funding programs to explore accessing the electrical grid, and; 4) opportunities for collaboration and knowledge exchange.

Keith Woods, Richard “Rich” Holden, and Kevin “Mitch” Mitchell from MBSE Canada shared their industry leading batteries and expert knowledge of how using clean energy technology on set versus diesel generators is more efficient and cost effective.

Raj Jawanda and Christophe Delavoye from Sunbelt Rentals showcased their battery energy storage systems and discussed the roadmap to net zero in the North American film industry.

Vancouver Island North Film Commission’s Executive Director, Joan Miller, and Regional Production Services Manager, Brandon Lepine, shared details of INFilm’s popular locations package includes four Voltstack 5k batteries available to productions filming in the region.

Vancouver Island South Film & Media Commissioner, Tara-Lee Novak, helped organize the first battery workshop in Victoria with the view of deploying this technology in future filming projects.

Representatives from IATSE 891 were also in attendance to articulate their support of the Vancouver Island crew and battery technology. Attendees were able to engage with subject matter experts and Film Commission representatives about practical tools to reduce their environmental footprint. 

The excitement and demand generated at the workshop was electric. The community communicated their demand for clean energy and Reel Green™ exploring options with local government to promote grid tie-in locations.
