Reel Green™ Lead, Justin Barnes, is featured in the first episode of IATSE 891’s Apple Box Talks podcast for 2025.
Justin joined the BC Film Commission at Creative BC in July 2024 and serves as the Chair of the Reel Green™ Advisory Committee, and Co-Chair of the Reel Green™ Clean Energy Committee. In previous assignments, he spent nine years as a location scout in the commercial film industry, primarily in episodic television, feature films, and commercials. Before entering the motion picture industry, he collaborated with Indigenous communities in British Columbia, Australia, and Ecuador to support sustainable economic growth, resource management, and strengthening governance institutions.
Justin brings diverse experience in developing social research tools, advising governments, leading community planning projects, and designing corporate social responsibility programs for global commodities firms which places him in a unique position to lead the Reel Green™ initiative. In this discussion, he explains how Reel Green™ is working to solve how production technician jobs can be made more sustainable without making their workday more difficult.
Reel Green™ is being reinvigorated and the focus is on tailoring and promoting the training, tools, resources and networking opportunities so they reach the technical crews on the ground.
The podcast is hosted by IATSE 891’s elected Business Representative, Crystal Braunwarth, and Assistant Business Representative, Hillary Bergshoeff, and offers an opportunity to go behind the scenes with B.C. motion picture industry professionals.
