This month, the City of Maple Ridge’s Waterfront Lot Film Kiosk celebrates its first birthday and a year of success. The 800 A kiosk came online in December 2024 and was supported by Reel Green™ at Creative BC’s Clean Energy Power Tie-ins Funding Program.
The Waterfront Lot is the city’s busiest filming base camp and has become a game-changer for environmentally sustainable film production in B.C. In 2025, the clean-power kiosk saved 95,914 litres of diesel, cutting 258.57 metric tons of CO₂ emissions and reducing noise and disruption in the community.
The Waterfront Lot was identified as the municipality’s most popular year-round location for film and TV productions to set up circus and crew parks which were being powered by heavy diesel generator use. The installation of the 800 A tie-in aligns with studio ESG and net-zero goals while offering productions reliable, plug-and-play clean BC Hydro energy.
Key 2025 Highlights:
- 221 days of usage
- 26 productions powered
- $176,800 in fuel savings
- $150,000 in revenue generated
- Equivalent to 75 cars driving for a year in emissions saved
The BC Hydro powered Waterfront Lot is critical to Maple Ridge’s film economy, without this kiosk the city estimates they would risk losing up to one-sixth of annual filming revenue and face increased diesel generator use across municipal streets.
This initiative proves that environmental sustainability and economic growth can go hand-in-hand, setting a new standard for green film production in B.C. The Reel Green™ Clean Energy Power Tie-ins Funding Program offers funding for grid tie-in installations and upgrades to high volume filming areas that will reduce generator use and emissions. Eligible applicants include local governments, First Nations governments, and businesses supporting B.C.’s film industry. Applications close March 31, 2026.
