Environmental sustainability is increasingly shaping film and television production in Canada, a message underscored at the 2026 CMPA Prime Time Conference panel “Green Screens: Tech, Climate, and the Future of Production.”
Held in January and supported by Reel Green™ at Creative BC, the session was moderated by Katharine Pavoni, Deputy Director of the BC Film Commission at Creative BC. The panel featured motion picture industry experts; Erin Haskett, President and Executive Producer, Lark Productions; Raja Khanna, Co-Founder and Chari, Dark Slope; Marsha Newbery, VP Business Development, Great Pacific Media; and Max Wolfond, VP of Production, New Metric Media.
Discussions explored the effect of climate change, evolving sustainability standards, and rapid digital transformation on production planning, budgeting, location decisions, and workflows. Emerging technologies such as virtual production and AI enabled workflows were highlighted as an opportunity to reduce emissions, travel, and material waste, though energy consumption remains an important consideration.
The central theme that emerged from the session was collaboration. Panellists emphasized both domestic and international production partners remain strongly committed to environmental sustainability, and agreed industry wide alignment and shared standards are crucial for achieving meaningful environmental outcomes while remaining competitive.
