What does ‘Circularity’ mean?
When we talk about circularity in film production, we mean the intentional design and management of material flows across the production lifecycle—from procurement through design, build, shoot, and wrap.
This approach preserves the embedded value of materials for as long as possible, prioritizing reduction, redesign, reuse, remanufacturing, and recovery to minimize waste at every stage.

Why is circularity hard to achieve?
Barrier: Circularity is treated as a preference rather than a requirement.
Solution: Implement explicit studio sustainability mandates in the production manual. Communicate these requirements clearly at kickoff. Assign people to these roles to ensure compliance.
Barrier: Requirements are introduced after the budget has been finalized
Solution: Integrate sustainability requirements into the earliest phases of pre-production budgeting to ensure they are included before the budget is locked.
Barrier: Standard recycling streams cannot process set materials because they are often painted, glued, or customized, making them ineligible for standard recycling.
Solution: Design for disassembly or use materials that are less processed. Engage specialized vendors (like those listed in the directory) who are equipped to handle production-specific waste rather than relying on standard municipal recycling streams.
Barrier: Circularity is treated as a preference rather than a requirement.
Solution: Plan material routing and diversion strategies from the start of the build phase, rather than leaving them until the strike phase.
Barrier: Departments may be penalized for using repurposed materials because their procurement budget may be reduced for the following season.
Solution: Update the internal accounting structure to incentivize, rather than penalize, the use of reused materials so that circular practices do not negatively impact future budgets.
